AQIVA Friends
AQIVA Friends was formed to help users of the amphitheatre complex keep up to date with what is happening at the site and get involved in making it an even better community space. The site comprises not just the Amphitheatre but also includes Querns Woods, Four Acre Field and the Obelisk. Working closely with the Town Council, and other partners, their aim is to be involved in the promotion, development and protection of the complex, with a focus on key issues of history, heritage, health, leisure, education and the environment ensuring that it has something to offer for all ages. If you would like to become a member of AQIVA and be put on their mailing list to receive a quarterly newsletter,  become a volunteer, or come to their meetings, please contact them.

Friends of the Gumstool Brook
‘The Friends of the Gumstool Brook and associated waterways’ was set up in response to deteriorating environmental and water conditions, especially with the growing phenomenon of a summer ‘drying up’ and occasional flooding of the Gumstool waterways. The Gumstool Brook (Gumstool refers to a medieval ducking stool although there is no evidence that one was ever used) is a small balancing waterway between the Daglingworth Stream and the main River Churn.  Fed from the Gloucester Street sluices there are the associated Barton Millpond, the Swimming Pool riverside walk, the Gumstool itself and the outflow of the Daglingworth Stream into the Abbey Grounds before it eventually rejoins the main river.

The Gumstool Brook and associated waterways, with antecedents dating back to Roman times, were dug and created in the seventeenth and eighteen centuries and fed from the River Churn and Daglingworth Stream. For a while at least two mills were powered on the complex.  Over many years the condition of the waterways has deteriorated and the ‘Friends’ have as their objective monitoring, renewal and restoration.

Friends of St. John Baptist Churchyard
The Friends are working with the Town Council to create a peaceful wildlife and nature reserve in the centre of town. Situated behind the Parish Church, the area had been used for centuries as a cemetery until it closed in 1872. It contains over twenty tombs which are grade 2 listed, and several specimen trees. The Town Council are responsible for grass cutting and safety inspections of the trees and headstones. The Friends Group have been busy with widening paths, painting railings and gates and generally improving the area for visitors to enjoy.
