The keys to Cirencester - Street Piano Project

The Corinium Hotel and Restaurant has been working together with Cirencester Town Council on an exciting project for summer 2023! Inspired by the Bristol based artist Luke Jerram’s “Play Me I’m Yours” Street Piano Project, Cirencester Market Place will be getting its own piano for the summer months.

Cirencester’s street piano project invites members of the public to share their love of music whilst creating an opportunity for people to meet, connect and enjoy some musical talents. The piano has been provided by The Corinium Hotel and Restaurant, and located with permission from Cirencester Town Council, St John Baptist Parish Church and Whitewall Gallery. It will be available for use most days between 10am and 7pm and anyone is welcome to come and play!

The piano is currently in the process of being decorated and weatherproofed before being moved from the Corinium Hotel into the marketplace over the next few weeks, it will remain in place until the beginning of September.

To watch the project in progress, visit the social media accounts of the Corinium Hotel and Restaurant or Cirencester Town Council, where updates of the project will be shared.

Cllr Sarah Orr, Lead Member, Community Services said “We are delighted to be involved in this project and are looking forward to bringing music as an added attraction to the already vibrant marketplace during the summer months”

David Sherriff from the Corinium Hotel and Restaurant said; “This is a really exciting project and we are thrilled to be adding another dimension to the wonderful town of Cirencester. We are looking forward to seeing people taking the opportunity to take to the keyboards and perform in public”

Touring internationally since 2008, Play Me, I’m Yours is an artwork by British artist Luke Jerram. Reaching millions of people worldwide, more than 2000 street pianos have been installed by Luke and his team in over 70 cities across the globe, from Tokyo to New York, bearing the simple instruction to ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’.

Play Me, I’m Yours invites the public to engage with and activate urban environment, to share their love of music and the visual arts. Located on streets, in public parks, markets and train stations the pianos are available for everyone to play and enjoy. Decorated by local artists and community groups, the street pianos create a place for exchange and an opportunity for people to connect. The idea for Play Me, I’m Yours has now also been replicated by different organisations, helping to create a global movement and embedding Luke’s concept into contemporary culture.
