Workshop - Throw a Vase on a Wheel

  • New Brewery Arts Brewery Court Cirencester GL7 1JH (map)

Join potter Ed Hill for a full-day workshop, with a focus on vases for flowers and buds and all other natural grown things. Ed will guide you on the wheel, to explore all the potential shapes or forms that can be made and constitute a traditional (or less traditional and completely unique) vase!

The workshop will focus on classic vase forms such as bud vases, bottle vases, tall cylinder vases, short spherical vases and anything else you might have in mind. The emphasis will be on how to achieve these shapes on the wheel in an effective way and the breaking down of each stage of how a lump of clay can turn into a beautiful vase shape.

This workshop will provide those who have completed a beginners throwing workshop or those with a good or basic experience of throwing an ideal opportunity to brush up on essential skills and take the next step in trying new approaches to making wheel thrown forms. You’ll have the chance to improve and focus on specific shapes as-well as learning to throw new forms and develop new techniques to further your skills on the wheel.

Throughout the day we will practice clay preparation and measuring, throwing classic cylinders, then students can start moving on to different forms of their choice that would make successful and functional vases - however simple or complex we can give every idea a try. Important techniques such as throwing tall and finishing rims, ‘bellying out’, forming gentle curves and defining shape will be demonstrated alongside ways to use specific tools to help in throwing and finishing forms on the wheel.

There will be step-by-step instructions, demos, sharing of ideas, as well as continual guidance and tuition throughout.

At the end of the day you will have much more confidence in all aspects of throwing, knowledge of the pivotal steps and stages involved in throwing a range of shapes successfully and a strong foundation for further ideas in throwing on the wheel.
