Illuminations - Exhibition by Alison Merry

  • The Corinium Museum Park Street Cirencester, England, GL7 2BX. United Kingdom (map)

Inspired in particular by the vibrancy of Medieval art, Alison has developed a painting style that puts a Medieval ‘spin’ on to her subjects for the purposes of storytelling and illustration. Many of her paintings are unashamedly pastiches but with an added ‘twist’ of her own invention to make the images original and contemporary. This exhibition showcases a selection of her works and her subjects include local history stories and legends, fact and fantasy, castles and cathedrals, saints and sinners, soldiers and green men, beasts and battles. She is especially delighted to be returning to exhibit in Cirencester where she lived and worked for several formative years.

Alison read Archaeology and History at Exeter University and after working as an illustrator at The British School at Rome and Oxford Archaeological Unit she returned in 1974 as assistant curator to the newly refurbished Corinium Museum in Cirencester. In subsequent decades she combined raising her children with freelance illustration work and local history writing.
