Community 20 Consultation

At its meeting on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet approved recommendations for the Safer Roads and Community 20s project, setting out budget spend, how locations will be prioritised, how communities will be engaged, and how decisions will be made, as well as confirming the approach to its delivery; this is supported by Cirencester Town Council.

The overarching objective of the initiative is to support improvements to road safety and public health. This is achieved through:

•            The reduction of injuries

•            Increased support for safer and more active travel behaviours

•            Lowering noise and air pollution levels

•            Fostering healthier neighbourhoods.

As part of its decision, the Cabinet also confirmed the first locations to be taken forward for public engagement, which are: Cirencester, Siddington and Preston, after scoring highly in Gloucestershire County Council’s prioritisation exercise that considered road safety, public health challenges and expressions of interest from Cirencester Town Council, Siddington Parish Council and Preston Parish Council.

The proposals for Cirencester, Siddington and Preston aim to create a safer and more consistent speed environment across the town and surrounding villages.

Most urban and residential village roads are proposed to become 20mph, alongside speed reductions on key routes entering the town and villages to support safer transitions to 20mph and improve conditions for people walking, wheeling and cycling.

The public engagement phase for Cirencester, Siddington and Preston is now open. Information will be shared via Gloucestershire County Council’s website and via a designated project webpage hosted on the Gloucestershire County Council Have Your Say platform.

An online survey and mapping tool will be hosted on the Have Your Say platform, where the community is able to comment on the proposals for Cirencester.
