Wood Carve a Dala Horse - New Brewery Arts

  • New Brewery Arts Brewery Court Cirencester, GL7 1JH United Kingdom (map)

These chunky little Swedish horses are a great introduction to woodcarving.

Their bold shapes can be created with very simple tools, and the stylisation makes it easy for everyone to achieve a really good finished piece, even without any previous carving experience. Emblematic of Sweden, the cheerful decoration has made these little horses popular Christmas gifts and decorations around the world. During this workshop you will learn to whittle with a traditional Swedish slojd, or handiwork knife. We will practice knifework on spare wood before tackling your carving. You will be able to choose the right whittling cut to safely shape the piece, taking slivers of wood away to reveal the final form. Time allowing, you will be able to base paint your horses. We will talk about the traditional Kurbits style of decoration, so you can continue to embellish your unique carving at home. We will also discuss tools, sharpening, and a host of other woody topics!
